The tourist-attracting city of Heidelberg lies in south south-west of Germany on the River Neckar. It is one of the cities of Baden-Württemberg province. The city has had a population of 146466 people in 2009. The city was developed first when the Romans built a camp and then some residences were built around it. This happened in the first century A.D. Then the settlement remained residential after the German tribes captured it in the third century. More serious urban history of Heidelberg dates back to the Middle Ages.
The city suffered bombing during the World War II less than many cities in Germany. So there are still several churches and historic buildings in and around the city. The tourists usually enjoy the sloped old streets of the city and the hills around it. The main churches of the city are Church of the Holy Spirit, The Church of the Jesuits, and St. Peter's Church.Heidelberg Castle is another historical monument of the city. The first building of this complex was built by Prince Elector Ruprecht III (1398–1410).
The University of Heidelberg have international reputation especially in human sciences. It has been active during the conflicts between the Lutheranism and Calvinism.
